Intended Use

TMJ Spreading Forceps are specialized cranio-maxillofacial instruments indicated strictly for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstructive surgeries. They are essential during procedures such as arthroplasty, meniscectomy, and the surgical release of joint ankylosis, where creating working access within the highly constricted articular space is necessary.

Function

This instrument features fine, blunt-tipped blades designed for careful insertion directly into the tight joint space between the mandibular condyle and the glenoid fossa. By gently compressing the handles, the surgeon opens the blades to apply controlled, progressive distraction. This action manually widens the joint cavity, providing the surgeon with clear visualization, allowing for the precise removal of damaged meniscal tissue, or facilitating the safe insertion of interpositional grafts.

Advantages

  • Atraumatic Distraction: The smooth, blunt outer edges of the working tips prevent accidental scoring or crushing of the delicate articular cartilage and joint capsule.
  • Optimized Access: The low-profile, specifically contoured jaw design allows seamless entry into the anatomically tight and narrow TMJ space.
  • Controlled Leverage: The precisely engineered handle mechanism allows the operator to apply gradual, measured pressure to safely stretch the joint without causing iatrogenic bone trauma.

How do TMJ spreaders differ from standard surgical bone spreaders?

TMJ spreaders are uniquely scaled down and angled specifically to operate safely within the exceptionally narrow confines of the temporomandibular joint, whereas standard spreaders are far too bulky.

Is the instrument completely autoclavable?

Yes. Forged from premium surgical-grade stainless steel, it is highly durable, entirely rust-resistant, and fully compatible with routine high-temperature autoclave sterilization.
